11 Tips on … being a pleasant person

  1. Be polite and courteous to all. Others will compare your actions to your message to see if the way you live matches up to what you preach. One of the most noticeable Christian examples is to be courteous, kind, and considerate.
  2. Smile! Itoften makes you more approachable. A sincere smile disarms the guarded, soothes the argumentative, calms the angry, and encourages the downhearted. It demonstrates confidence, patience, faith, and kindness.
  3. Deal with conflict in a calm and levelheaded manner. Not only do cooler heads prevail in the most difficult conflicts, but curbing human tendencies toward frustration and anger is the Christlike thing to do.
  4. Adopt an optimistic and positive attitude. It will lift your spirit and the spirits of those around you, even in the face of difficulties. It is a demonstration of your faith in the Lord’s care for you, since you have His promise that all things will work for your good (Romans 8:28).
  5. Be friendly when meeting someone new. Focus on making the other person feel comfortable, accepted, and at ease, and you will soon forget your own shyness.
  6. Look for the good in others, and frequently offer sincere compliments. Everybody wants and needs to know that he or she is appreciated.
  7. Have a good sense of humor. It will make you a joy to be around. The ability to not take life too seriously can take the edge off setbacks, mistakes, and potentially awkward situations.
  8. Take on a humble attitude. It enriches the lives of those around you, because it’s a manifestation of love. When you are humble, putting others’ needs above your own, serving, and giving to others becomes easier and a source of joy. It’s also pleasing to the Lord (James 4:6).
  9. Be a good listener by making an effort to understand and empathize with the person who is talking to you. Doing so shows the other person that you care about what he or she is going through. It enhances your ability to give helpful advice and effective encouragement.
  10. React graciously when others make mistakes. Everybody messes up sometimes, including you. The Bible tells us to forgive as we would want to be forgiven (Matthew 6:14), and to love despite sins and mistakes (1 Peter 4:8).
  11. Think about the fruits of the spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23, and apply them to your everyday life and interactions with others.
